July 28-29, 2006 - Detail from starboard of the periscope shears immediately above the lookout platform. The two large shafts in the center are the periscope housings, #2 and #1 scopes (left to right) respectively. The square shaped object mounted to #2 scope is the underwater loop antenna. This antenna in this location is another confirmation of the boat's identity. To the right of the scopes is the forward SJ radar mast. Courtesy of Vladimir Kartashev.

July 28-29, 2006 - Both periscopes are raised. Wrapped tightly around them are nets and cables snagged from fishing vessels. This view from port shows the forward SJ radar to the left and the mast for the aft SD radar at right. Finding the scopes raised would indicate the vessel was caught very near the surface and sustained catastrophic damage during the initial attack. Courtesy of Vladimir Kartashev.

July 28-29, 2006 - Port radio antenna lead-in. These were the attachment points for the radio antennas which were rigged from the periscope shears and ran the length of the boat. The antenna wires entered the boat through the lead-ins, one each, port and starboard, and were fed down into the radio compartment directly below. A piece of the wire can still be seen attached at the center. Courtesy of Vladimir Kartashev.

Fairwater detail comparison - At left, Dick O'Kane is resting his left foot on the starboard radio antenna lead-in. The undamaged RDF loop mast is behind him. The breech in the fairwater from the bomb hit starts where O'Kane's right foot rests. Note: SJ radar mast has been censored from image.

July 28-29, 2006 - The forward 20mm gun mount is a major identifying factor. Wahoo carried three of these Mark 5 mounts which had a solid base. By late 1943, many boats carried lighter tripod-style Mark 10 mounts. When in use, the gun was installed in the upper framework. When not in use, it was stored in a waterproof locker. Aft 20mm gun mount comparison - This was Wahoo at the end of her fourth war patrol with 20mm gun mount in the foreground. Note the solid base of the gun mount matches perfectly with the wreck images.

July 28-29, 2006 - Superstructure detail where it meets the ballast tanks and pressure hull on the port side just aft of the fairwater. Long stretches of intact superstructure skin further aft, with appropriate Mare Island limber holes, indicate the light metal skin here has been blown away by the midships bomb hit or subsequent depth charging. Courtesy of Vladimir Kartashev.

July 28-29, 2006 - Rising up the side from the previous shot the port side can be seen looking forward at the fairwater, from the level of where the superstructure rolls at the edge of the deck. The wreck is teeming with fish inside and out. Note both periscopes are raised and wrapped in snagged fishing nets and cables. Courtesy of Vladimir Kartashev.
